Urban Square

Frank Gehry's master plan for the five hectare Sønderborg harbour area has now been divided into a main project surrounding the central square, and a number of individual projects. The main project encompasses a theme hotel, as by far the largest building, an art hall, and retail stores and offices – a total of 28,000 square metres.

The main project is expected to create around 500 new permanent jobs in Sønderborg. Total investment of around DKK 700-800 Million in Sønderborg harbour will help make the city a far more popular travel destination, all year round. The plan is to build a number of other attractions at the square for city residents and visitors, in addition to the hotel. These could be innovative art and culture attractions, such as the planned art hall and the multicultural centre, treatment facilities for medical tourism, and shopping areas.
